Noted Researcher to Speak on the Science of Sleep March 9 at WWU |
![]() Krueger Sleep expert James Krueger will present a seminar titled "What exactly is it that sleeps? and Why?" at noon on Monday, March 9, in Academic Instructional Center-West Room 210 at Western Washington University. Krueger, a professor in Washington State University's Department of Vet & Comparative Anatomy, Pharmacology and Physiology, runs a laboratory at WSU that focuses on three areas of sleep-related research: the biochemical regulation of sleep, sleep and infectious diseases and brain organization as it applies to sleep. |

Music dept. presents "Building Blocks to Literacy: an Orff Workshop" on Oct. 25 |
|
The WWU Department of Music, in cooperation with the student chapters of Music Educators National Conference and American Choral Directors Association, will present a workshop entitled "Building Blocks to Literacy: An Orff Workshop" on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 24 of the Performing Arts Center. The Orff method was created by Carl Orff, a German composer most famous for "Carmina Burana," and Gunild Keetman. It recognizes the relationship between music and rhythm and uses movement, singing, instruments, and improvisation to educate children in music, grades K-6. |

Members of the faculty at Western Washington University are invited to participate in a three-day working session to gain ideas and practices for enhancing writing instruction. The workshop, scheduled for Sept. 9 through 11 at the North Cascades Institute Learning Center, is sponsored by the Writing Assessment Group and Writing Instruction Support with support from the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education and the Office of Institutional Assessment, Research, and Testing. |

The Department of Chemistry has announced that the seminar originally scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Friday, April 18, in Chemistry Building Room 285 has been postponed. This seminar, titled "Studies of Growth Kinetics in Organic Vapor-Liquid-Solid Deposition," was to be led by WWU graduate student Kevin Bufkin. More information will be released as it comes available. The department has announced the addition of a seminar for spring quarter: Barry Stoddard from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's Division of Basic Sciences will present "Homing Endonucleases: Reagents for Gene Targeting" at 3:15 p.m. April 25 in Chemistry Building Room 285. The seminar is free and open to everyone. |
