Jim Davis' Western Open takes place next Wednesday, July 8

Next week, Western's best golfers (and others) will compete for the right to say they won the Jim Davis Memorial and join the ranks of golfers from the last 34 years.

Jim Davis was a longtime educator and administrator at Western. He came to WWU in 1974 as the dean of arts and sciences and professor in the political science department. Among Jim's many great qualities was his passion for golf.

Faculty and staff softball, basketball intramural leagues are available; signup deadline is June 30

The folks at Campus Recreation are holding faculty- and staff-specific leagues this summer, and theymay continue the leagues if they're popular.

Those interested must sign up in person at the Wade King Student Recreation Center. The sign-up deadline is tomorrow, June 30, when the facility closes. Forms are available on the rec center's Web site and at the rec center.

Alumni Association to hold second annual barbecue and concert

The Western Washington University Alumni Association plays host to the second annual Get Your Blue On BBQ and Bluegrass Concert from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 9 in the PAC Plaza.

If it rains, festivities will be moved indoors to the Viking Union Multipurpose Room.

WWU Humans Vs. Zombies club to start tag game on campus today

The Western Washington University Associated Students club WWU Humans Vs. Zombies will play host to a game of tag on campus from today, May 27, through May 31. Game hours are from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. (daylight hours) daily.

Humans Vs. Zombies Tag is a game in which a group of pre-registered players (humans) attempt to survive the growing zombie infestation on campus (posed by other players tagging the humans). The human players will be fending off the zombie players by throwing balled-up socks and launching foam Nerf darts at the zombie players. Humans will wear bright yellow armbands on the upper arm, and zombies will wear yellow bands on their foreheads.

Bear conservationist and filmmaker to discuss upcoming documentary

As a part of the Huxley College Speaker Series at Western Washington University, filmmaker and conservationist Chris Morgan will discuss his upcoming feature-length documentary in a presentation titled "Beartrek: A Global Campaign and Feature Film about a Motorcycle Quest to Seek the World's Rarest Bears."

The presentation is free and open to the public, and will be taking place at 3 p.m. Friday, May 8, in Communications Facility room 125.

Climate expert to speak in Huxley speaker series March 4

The Huxley College Speaker Series at Western Washington University will host Katey Walter, a researcher and professor at University of Alaska Fairbanks, at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, in Communications Facility Room 420.

Walter will speak on her primary research interests of carbon cycling and greenhouse gas emissions from aquatic ecosystems, as well as feedback to climate change.  This presentation is free and open to the public.

Electron microscope provides unique visuals for students

Two of Western Washington University's photography classes are getting unique perspectives on landscapes this quarter thanks to the donated use of the university's scanning electron microscope.

The microscope, which allows for far more detailed images beyond the range of traditional light microscopy, is being used by Associate Professor of Art Garth Amundson's two sections of Photography 290 and one section of Photography 390 to explore the concept of the visual landscape in new ways.

Concert Choir presents cabaret fundraiser performances April 4 and 5

Western Washington University's Concert Choir will present "WWU Concert Choir Cabaret," a show featuring Broadway favorites, at 8 p.m. April 4 and at 2 p.m. April 5 in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall on campus.

Holocaust survivor Noémi Ban to speak at Western Feb. 25

Noémi Ban, an award-winning teacher and survivor of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp, will share her story at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, in Artzen 100 at Western Washington University.

Ban will speak about how she lost most of her family and why she shares her story in hopes that current and future generations will prevent future genocides.

"Your generation may be the last one able to listen to a survivor," Ban has told WWU students.

Matinee 'Really Rosie' on stage twice March 6

Western Washington University's College of Fine and Performing Arts will present the California Theatre Center's production of "Really Rosie" at 10 a.m. and noon on Friday, March 6, on the Performing Arts Center Mainstage.

Geared for grades K-6, the performances are part of the CFPA's Education Matinee Series.  Now in its fourth season, the Education Matinee Series provides free performing arts matinees on Western Washington University's campus to children in grades K-12 and serves nearly 4,000 students a year.

Opera Studio presents 'Dido and Aeneas' beginning Thursday

"Dido and Aeneas," an English baroque opera by Henry Purcell, will be presented at Western Washington University at 8 p.m., Feb. 19-21, and at 3 p.m. on Feb. 22, in the Underground Theatre.

One of the earliest of English operas, "Dido and Aeneas" depicts a story of the legendary Queen Dido of Carthage and the Trojan refugee Aeneas. When Aeneas and his crew are shipwrecked in Carthage, he and the queen fall in love. While on a hunting trip, an evil sorceress separates the lovers and tricks Aeneas, hoping to bring about the destruction of Carthage. Aeneas, believing that the gods have ordered it, abandons Dido. Heartbroken, Dido falls into despair and dies.

Tuxill lecture on "The Ecology of Disaster" is noon today

WWU's John Tuxill presents "The Ecology of Disaster: How Mayan Farmers Cope with Hurricanes, Drought, and Climate Calamities in Yucatan" at noon today in Miller Hall Room 232.

The immediate economic and environmental aftereffects of drought, hurricanes, floods and other extreme climatic events are chronicled intensively by media sources, but surprisingly little academic investigation has been made of how natural disasters affect the ecology of small farm landscapes, and how agrarian households cope with such events.

"Conversations" dance/theatre piece begins run tonight

Kai Steele, left, and Marion Southcott will be appearing in "Conversations," which begins Jan. 9.

Skateboard meets walker in "Conversations," nine diverse physical explorations of the collision between the aged and the young. The evening features eight participants between the ages of 63 and 93 and eight participants between the ages of 8 and 14.

The project is the work of Pam Kuntz, who in the past three years has generated four separate dance/theatre events featuring community members and their compelling stories.  Her past pieces have included The Mom Project, That One Curve, The Parent Project and Reporting Live From Crazy (with Aundrea McBride).

"Stress and Your Brain" is the fourth discussion topic of the series, and will be hosted by Mike Mana, an associate professor in Western's Psychology Department.

A few random notes from around the WWU campus

The annual staff arts and crafts show, which began in 1995, always was a favorite of President Karen Morse. But even though she’s gone, the show will go on, says Nancy Phillips, who coordinates the show. This year, the exhibit will be expanded to include works by WWU faculty members, Phillips says. The show will take place from March 16 to 20 on campus.

Jingle to support arthritis foundation

Members of the campus community are invited to participate in the 21th Annual Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis, to be held at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 13 in downtown Bellingham (starts at Cornwall Avenue and York Street).

The festive event is a 2-mile walk or 4-mile run, each participant receiving a long-sleeved shirt and being outfitted with jingle bells. Costumes are welcome.
