SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Andrew R. Bodman, who has served in academic and administrative positions in higher education for nearly 25 years – most recently at Western Washington University – has been named provost and vice president of academic affairs at California State University, San Bernardino. He will assume his duties with the start of the new academic year on July 1. “We’re delighted that our new provost will be an excellent fit for the university,” said Albert Karnig, president of Cal State San Bernardino. “Andy has had extraordinary administrative, planning, program, research, personnel and other leadership experiences. He and his wife, Iris, will quickly become part of the CSUSB community. This is very good news for the university.” Bodman replaces Louis Fernandez, who will retire in June. Fernandez has served at the university since 1991, first as the dean of the College of Natural Sciences and as a professor of geological sciences before being named acting vice president for academic affairs in 1994. He was appointed to the permanent position in 1995 and added the title of provost in 1998. “This is a wonderful opportunity for me to join a terrific institution,” Bodman said. “I really enjoyed my interaction with faculty, staff and students when I was on campus recently, and I’m looking forward to becoming a part of the Cal State San Bernardino community.” Bodman will oversee all of the university’s academic colleges and the Academic Affairs division, which includes academic personnel and programs, research programs, scheduling, undergraduate studies and graduate studies. He served as provost and vice president of academic affairs at Western Washington University from 1999 to 2007, and also was a professor of geography in the university’s Huxley College of the Environment. He was responsible for the development of new academic programs at Western, as well as for the quality of existing academic programs, assuring that those eligible met accreditation requirements. Previously, Bodman served on the faculty for 21 years at the University of Vermont, where he was department chair from 1985-1995, vice provost from 1995-1999, and interim dean of the graduate college from 1997-1999. He also served on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (1976-1978), where he was coordinator of the urban and regional studies program, and the University of Missouri-St. Louis (1975-1976). A native of Great Britain, Bodman earned a bachelor’s degree from the Gonville and Caius College at Cambridge University in England. He also has a master’s degree from Cambridge, along with a master’s and Ph.D. in geography from The Ohio State University.
