Big Ole sounds off
The Big Ole steam whistle, located atop Western's Steam Plant, was re-machined during the summer to increase the strength of its signal, which in previous tests has not been loud enough. Here, it blows successfully during a test conducted on Oct. 19, 2008. In the event of an actual emergency, the whistle will sound to indicate that there is an emergency affecting campus and will be a signal for WWU students, faculty, and staff to check their cell phones (text messages) or e-mail for emergency messages via the Western Alert emergency notification system.
