Lauren Hefflin isn't likely to lead Western Washington University women's basketball in scoring on many nights, but she's almost always a lock to pace the team in bruises -both given and received. Since returning to the Vikings' lineup in December after fracturing her finger, the junior post has plotted a black-and-blue course through the paint for the WWU. It's showed both in her ability to hold opposing posts in check and provide a solid presence for the Vikings in the middle on offense. It's also showed in Western's record this season.

There's a theory in sports that sometimes it's not how you start a game, but how you finish it. If anyone needs proof, it seems like the Western Washington University women's basketball team is working on a doctoral dissertation to prove its merit. For the second consecutive game, the Vikings had to overcome a slow start, this time against Northwest Nazarene, and for the second time it was their defense that bailed them out.

Sometimes you win pretty and sometimes you just find a way to win. No matter how much dressing the Western Washington University women's basketball team puts on its win over Western Oregon on Saturday, Jan. 30, there aren't too many snippets from the contest likely to show up on a highlight film. If Tyler Amaya is half as exciting on court as the coach is excited about signing the 1.98m forward then he is bound to be a crowd pleaser. Otago Nuggets coach Alf Arlidge is absolutely thrilled the product of Western Washington University will be joining the Nuggets. The 27-year-old will arrive in Dunedin about two weeks before the team's opening National Basketball League game against the Auckland Stars on March 4 and is expected to make a big impact on the league. The most impressive feature of his curriculum vitae is that he was invited to work out with the Houston Rockets in September
