Bellingham -- Ramiro Espinoza has been appointed student trustee at Western Washington University and will be the first-ever WWU graduate student to serve in that capacity.
Appointed by Gov. Chris Gregoire, Espinoza will serve on Western’s Board of Trustees until June 30, 2011.

Nettle Honey, a folk/bluegrass group from Seattle, will play at noon today in the Performing Arts Center Plaza on campus. The free concert is the last in a summer series put on by WWU's Associated Students.
Nettle Honey, comprising band mbers Colin Sterling, Johnny Fitzpatrick, Robert Fulwiler and Brittany Newell, was a big hit at this year's Yellingham festival. Their music is influenced by performers like The Tallboys, Jason Webley, Spoonshine, Foghorn String Band, Vetiver, Joanna Newsom, Iron and Wine, and Dovekins.
Indie rock group The Globes will play a free concert on the Western Washington University campus Wednesday, July 14, as part of the WWU Associated Students' Summer Noon Concert Series.
The band will play from noon to 1 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Plaza.
The Globes, orginally from Spokane, relocated to Seattle in 2007, releasing their second EP, "Sinter Songs," in 2009.
Western Washington University, which has a long tradition of national leadership in sustainability and environmental education, has now completed a Climate Action Plan, which outlines a number of university goals to address climate change.
The WWU plan is part of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, which is an effort undertaken by a network of universities and colleges that have made institutional commitments to eliminate net greenhouse gas emissions from specified campus operations and to promote research and educational efforts on climate change.
Washington Mile, from Seattle, played at Western Washington University on Wednesday, July 7, as part of the Associated Students' Summer Noon Concert series.
Bands slated for later in the series include The Globes (July 14), LeRoy Bell & His Only Friends (July 21) and Nettle Honey (July 28).

Colin Watrin has been elected Western Washington University’s Associated Students president for the 2010-2011 academic year.
The Associated Students is both the association of all WWU students and the official student governing body. The AS is responsible for providing a framework for a variety of experiential learning opportunities and serving as a vehicle for student involvement in the governance of the university.
Singer/songwriter Vicci Martinez will kick off the summer 2010 series of free concerts on the Western Washington University campus. The Summer Noon Concert series, put on by WWU's Associated Students, brings various acts to Western for free noon concerts on the Performing Arts Center plaza.

The Ethnic Student Center at Western Washington University recently received an award from the Whatcom Human Rights Task Force for creating “a safe and supportive environment for historically underrepresented groups and allies while providing cultural and educational programs.”
Western Washington University’s effort to be more active with its Federal relations agenda is reaping benefits, as the activities of Western’s administration and the leadership of the Associated Students have yielded positive results in Washington, D.C.
Voting is now over in the Western Washington University Associated Students elections; students had through 2 p.m. today to casts their votes for the AS student government for 2010-2011.
Unofficial results should be posted later today. The results probably will not be made official until May 21.
The Associated Students Recycle Center will hold a "Recovery Drive" next week to collect unwanted items from students.
The drive, which will take place during finals week March 15-19 in residence halls across campus, will provide an opportunity to reuse or recycle unwanted items. Residents can donate clothes, appliances, books, electronics, un-upholstered furniture and other personal and household items in the blue barrels located in residence halls.
Western Votes and the Associated Students of Western Washington University are planning a walk-out and rally from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, in the Performing Arts Center Plaza on campus.
”In this rally it is our goal to educate the public about what it would mean to have the state's budget for higher education cut and inspire the student body into taking action to inform their legislators that they do not agree with the governor's new budget and proposed cuts to higher education,” said Western Votes member Heather Siddiqui.
The Associated Students club Chinese Student Association will play host to “Lunar New Year’s Night” from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will include performances by students, traditional calligraphy and live ritual dance. There will also be free food, karaoke and face painting.
The Associated Students Outback Center will play host to David Sansone, who will talk about “Edible Forest Gardening” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 10, in Fraser Hall Room 4.
Sansone, director of Perennial Harvest, will present a digital slideshow about a cultivation method that mimics nature using a mix of fruit, nut trees and berry producing shrubs that can produce more than modern farms in a sustainable way.
Western Washington University students took a break from their studying Thursday to enjoy food, music, button making and massages. The event was sponsored by the Associated Students at WWU.
Associated Students Productions Viking Union (VU) Gallery will host the first show of the year with “Club Austin” from Oct. 19-Nov. 9 in the VU Gallery 507.
“Club Austin” will exhibit the artwork of Austin Stiegemeier, a Bachelor of Fine Arts student in the printmaking and painting departments.
The Associated Students Outdoor Center at Western Washington University will play host to “Birds of Whatcom County” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14.
This event provides an opportunity for individuals to learn more about bird-watching in Whatcom County. Pile in the van with Outdoor Center experts to explore Bald Eagle convergences, rare Marbled Murrelet habitat and estuaries offering a rest stop for migrating birds.
Tickets are $20 for students with I.D. and $30 for guests.
The Associated Students Social Issues Resource Center at Western Washington University will play host to a “Social Issues Kickoff” at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 in Viking Union Room 565 A/B.
Individuals are encouraged to attend with a willingness to learn about social issues through respectful questions and comments.
Clubs and groups are encouraged to bring materials and informative posters, brochures, stickers and other materials that can be shared with others.
Matt Jarrell, the 2009-2010 Associated Students president, continues his 'Talk Time' sessions this afternoon at 4 p.m. in Academic Instructional Center West Room 210.
Through Oct. 22, Jarrell is holding sessions for each college at Western Washington University. All are invited to attend and share their thoughts with the AS president.
