Ralph Vernacchia (Physical Education, Health and Recreation) received the Dr. C. Harmon Brown Sports Medicine and Science Award at the 2009 USA Track and Field annual meeting held Dec. 5 in Indiannapolis. He was recognized for his dedication and contributions to sport science, particularly sport psychology, in the sport of track and field.

In the spotlight

Tina Storer, education and curriculum specialist for the Center for Canadian-American Studies at Western Washington University, is the 2009 recipient of the International Education Award.

Storer coordinates the nationally acclaimed Annual K-12 STUDY CANADA Summer Institute for K-12 Educators. The mission of the program is to provide elementary, middle and high school teachers with a foundation for teaching about Canada and to encourage increased curriculum connections to our northern neighbor.

Joseph Garcia (Leadership Institute) attended the SACNAS national conference from Oct. 15 to 18 in Dallas. At the conference he gave a presentation as part of the Conference Leadership Institute titled “Leadership Style: Self Evaluation and Assessment.” He also conducted a workshop on decision-making and governance for the SACNAS Board of Directors at their board meeting prior to the conference.

Jason Kanov (Management) contributed to a symposium called "Compassion in organizations and compassionate questions in organizational scholarship" that won an award: the Management Education and Development Division Global Forum Best Symposium. Kanov's portion of the symposium was called "Understanding compassion in organizations," and he co-presented it with his colleague Jacoba Lilius (Queen's University). The symposium took place on Aug.

The International Education Award recognizes the efforts of members of the Western Washington University community in expanding global awareness and international understanding on the campus and in the surrounding communities. It was established in 2008 to highlight exceptional innovations in curriculum development, facilitation of study abroad activities and provision of services to international students and scholars.

Nicholas Zaferatos (Huxley College of the Environment) was a recipient of the “2009 Green Good Design Award” from the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design, and Urban Studies and the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design for his work in directing student-based research in the preparation of the Farsa Village Sustainability Redevelopment Plan on the Island of Kefalonia, Greece.

Sheila Webb (Journalism) received the First Place Faculty Paper Award in the Magazine Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication at the annual convention in August in Boston. The award was for Webb's paper "The Creation of Community in Reiman Magazines–A Reader Reception Study." The paper is part of a continuing study on the Reiman Co. magazines. The Reiman Company produces 12 magazines on food, home and gardening with a "country" bent.
