Bellingham -- Ramiro Espinoza has been appointed student trustee at Western Washington University and will be the first-ever WWU graduate student to serve in that capacity.

Appointed by Gov. Chris Gregoire, Espinoza will serve on Western’s Board of Trustees until June 30, 2011.

Western President Bruce Shepard announced today that he will recommend to Western’s Board of Trustees on Friday that they approve an option on the state’s “furlough bill” that will not require university employees to take furlough days or for the university to be closed.

“After thorough review and many discussions on campus, it became clear to us that employee furloughs or campus closure would create far more problems than any savings realized,” Shepard said.

Gov. Chris Gregoire will speak at the first of three Commencement ceremonies at Western Washington University June 12.

Former Secretary of State Ralph Munro (’66) will speak at the second ceremony and Kevin Raymond, director of external affairs for two green technology companies, will address graduates and guests at the third ceremony.

Board of Trustees minutes from 1920 to 2008 are now available in a searchable format on the Board of Trustees Web site.

These historical records are now preserved electronically and are accessible to board members, students and the interested public. This project was completed with the help of Barbara Coffman, University Archivist Tony Kurtz and Peter Smith, Western’s Digital Initiatives Librarian.
