State Sen. Dale Brandland (R-Bellingham) visited the Western Washington University campus on Wednesday, Jan. 6, for a tour of the ongoing construction at Miller Hall.

During his tour, Brandland and WWU President Bruce Shepard stopped to say a few words to members of the construction crew, from Dawson Construction.

"As bad as the economy is right now, I shudder to think where we would be if we didn't have projects like this," Brandland said. "We're going to recover from this, and stuff like this is really what's going to get us back."

Western students, faculty and staff and community members celebrated Veterans Day at a 10:30 a.m. ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 10 in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room. A reception immediately followed the ceremony.

The ceremony was sponsored by the Veterans Outreach Center, and the reception was sponsored by the President’s Office.

Western Washington University President Bruce Shepard is scheduled to speak before the Washington state Senate Friday morning. The session will air live on TVW, the Washington state public affairs television network, beginning at 8 a.m.

Presidents of other four-year institutions of higher education in Washington also are scheduled to speak.

The session can be viewed online at http://www.tvw.org/.

Shepard and the other presidents will be testifying before the Senate Higher Education & Workforce Development Committee.

RSVP deadline is Sept. 11

All WWU faculty and staff are welcome to join President Bruce Shepard for breakfast and opening convocation on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Breakfast will be served in the Viking Commons from 7:30 to 8:25 a.m., and the president's address on the Performing Arts Center Mainstage will take place from 8:40 to 9:30 a.m.

Breakfast is free, but reservations are required so that catering can prepare ample food. Reservations must be submitted by Friday, Sept. 11, at http://www.09convo.eventbrite.com or by calling ext. 2255.
