When Summer Morgan feeds Rocky treats from her hand, sits with him on her lap, or shuffles around him to kiss his muzzle, the 4-year-old girl is doing more than showering the golden retriever with love. She's learning to use her hands, to sit upright and to walk. Summer works under the guidance of Jill Smith, a physical therapist for the Children's Neurodevelopmental Program in Bellingham, and with the help of Rocky, a therapy dog. "That's amazing," the girl's mother, Samantha Owens, said of her daughter's response to Rocky. "It seems almost like it's a calming thing.

If you're looking for a Christmas gift for an outdoors enthusiast, Bellingham's Dan Baharav has produced a unique vision of sea kayaking. His book, "Sea Kayaking from Mountains to Ocean," combines outdoor adventure stories, 124 color photographs, and timely observations about Northwest Washington's watershed ecology. A longtime environmental consultant, Baharav, 69, writes about kayaking on rivers toward the ocean as well as kayaking around local islands. The book is available immediately at Village Books and the two Community Food Co-op stores.

Mark Malijan, a spring 2009 intern with the Western Washington University Office of University Communications, created this video of one patient and his family's experiences with the Communication Sciences and Disorders Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic on campus that quarter.

This piece looks into Western Washington University’s Communication Sciences and Disorders program. The clinic gives students a hands-on learning experience, while providing a vital service to the surrounding community.

Members of Western Washington University's chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association and students, teachers and patients of the Communication Sciences & Disorders Department at WWU gathered to participate in an art project to commemorate the new Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic in the Academic Instructional Center on April 15, 2009. The art will hang in the department's new clinic area.
