Ralph Vernacchia, director of the Center for Performance Excellence at Western Washington University and a professor in the Department of Physical Education, Health and Recreation, will speak about the legacy of the Olympic Games at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, in Arntzen Hall Room 100 on the WWU campus.
For some, playing in the Olympics would be a lifelong dream.
But who says you can only have one lifelong dream?
Saratoga Springs native Kathleen Kauth, 30, said she is fulfilling another lifelong dream by having moved - the plan is temporarily - to California. The 2006 Olympic women's ice hockey player now lives in the Bay area and takes classes at the University of California at Berkley in solar energy and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. She started taking classes this past fall semester and will be done around Christmas.
The 2010 Winter Olympics aren't until next month, but students and staff at Wade King Elementary School are already celebrating the international sporting event.
On Tuesday, Jan. 26, students got a chance to participate in their own Olympic games and earn gold medals. And while ice skates and bobsleds were traded in for paper plates and scooters, respectively, students still got an understanding of what it would be like to be part of the rigorous competition.
"It's hard to do those sports," said second-grader Emily Gaven. "It takes courage to do that kind of stuff."
Erin Porter Bembry, a short track speed skater who competed for the United States in the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympic Games, and Donovan Tildesley, a Canadian swimmer and multiple medalist who, blind since birth, competed in the past three Summer Paralympics, will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, in Arntzen Hall Room 100 on the Western Washington University campus.
The 2010 Winter Olympics are coming to Vancouver and Whistler, B.C., in February, followed by the Paralympics in March.
Western Washington University's contracted vendor for bus transportation, Bellair Charters, has indicated that availability for bus transportation during these two months is already very tight. Departments planning to use bus transportation for field trips during February and March should make their reservations immediately.
Those who need help with bus transportation should contact Barbara Lewis at (360) 650-3068.

Also in attendance were representatives from WWU's Center for Canadian-American Studies and Border Policy Research Institute and other school officials.
