The Carl H. Simpson Award, which includes a $1,000 award, recognizes and supports efforts to create bridges and forge new paths that others may follow and build upon in turn.
Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire has declared that March 8 to 12 is Classified School Employee Week in Washington.
"These dedicated individuals deserve recognition and thanks for the outstanding work they are doing for this state, their communities and the children enrolled in Washington's public schools," Gregoire said in a proclamation announcing the week of recognition.
Washington has nearly 50,000 classified school employees, according to the proclamation.
Edward Ousselin (Modern and Classical Languages) has received the “Palmes académiques” award from the French Ministry of Education. The Ordre des Palmes Académiques (Order of Academic Palms) is an Order of Chivalry of France to academics and educators. The order was originally created by Napoleon to honour eminent members of the University of Paris. It was re-established on Oct. 4, 1955, by President René Coty, and is one of the world's oldest civil awards.

Nominations are now being accepted for the Women of Color Empowerment Award, which recognizes an individual who demonstrates excellence in contributions to women of color while enhancing his or her understanding and sensitivity to issues and concerns for women of color. All enrolled students, faculty and staff of Western Washington University are eligible to be nominated. WSU Athletic Director Jim Sterk was among four inducted into the Western Washington University Athletics Hall of Fame on Feb. 6.
Sterk set a WWU Vikings season record for tackles as a linebacker. He received a bachelor’s degree at WWU in 1980, and earned four letters in football and one in basketball. During the 1977 season, Sterk was a first-team NAIA District One football all-star, team captain and MVP in helping the Vikings to the district championship game.
The induction ceremony took place in Bellingham on the WWU campus.

Western Washington University men's basketball forward Derrick Webb has been named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for Jan. 24-30.
A 6-foot-3 senior from Port Orchard, Webb scored 73 points, including 40 in a 112-78 home win over Western Oregon and 33 in a 100-75 road victory against Montana State Billings. His total was the third highest for two games in school and GNAC history.
The 40 points versus Western Oregon were the most ever by a Viking player on the school's home floor.

Western Washington University junior Corey Windnagel, son of Susan Windnagel of Maple Falls, received a $5,000 Kaiser-Borsari Educational Foundation Scholarship for Diversity for the 2009-2010 academic year. The scholarship is given to an engineering technology major who demonstrates high academic potential, creativity and leadership qualities.
Lynden High School will add four members to its athletic hall of fame on Jan. 19, when Mark Matthiesen, Seymour "Stu" Stuurmans, Ron Bennick and Dick Bedlington are inducted.
The four join past Hall of Fame inductees Jake Maberry, Rollie DeKoster, Howard Heppner, Hub DeJong, John Clark, Bob Kildall, Lawrence Honcoop and Terry DeValois.
The induction ceremony will be held at Homestead Farms in Lynden. Tickets can be purchased at the Lynden High School main office. The cost is $40 and includes a prime rib dinner. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner to be served at 6 p.m.
Western Washington University ranks among the top 100 public colleges and universities in the nation that “deliver strong academics at affordable prices,” according to Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine.
In its February 2010 issue, Kiplinger’s magazine ranks Western 54th on its list of the 100 Best Values in Public Colleges in the United States for 2009-2010. The magazine ranked Western 56th in 2008-2009.

Western Washington University men's basketball point guard Morris Anderson has been named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for Dec. 27 through Jan. 2.
A 6-foot-3 senior from Federal Way, Anderson scored 35 points and also had 13 assists, eight rebounds and five steals in leading the Vikings to wins over Dixie State, 81-73, and SUNY-Geneseo, 75-63.
The victories extended Western's winning streak to 12, the fourth longest in school history and the sixth longest in GNAC history.

Western Washington University in Bellingham ranked No. 54 on the list. WWU costs in-state residents $15,572, or $8,428 after aid. The school offers 88 percent of its students financial aid and its four-year graduation rate is 34 percent.
