Gov. Chris Gregoire has directed that flags at all Washington state agency buildings be lowered to half-staff Thursday, Nov. 12, in memory of U.S. Army Specialist Aaron S. Aamot of Custer. Aamot was killed last week in Afghanistan when an improvised explosive device detonated near his military vehicle.

Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business Thursday, or first thing Friday morning, Nov. 13.

When Paul Wright graduated from Ferndale High School in 2002, he knew he was headed to the Navy instead of college, where many of his fellow graduates were going. But after spending four years in the military, most of it stationed on an aircraft carrier off Japan, and discovering the financial benefits available to him for his service, he thought "it would be stupid" not to give college a shot. "I would have gone to work," the Western Washington University student and Veteran Outreach Center employee said. "But I had money that just gets deleted, it just goes away if you don't use it.

Western students, faculty and staff and community members celebrated Veterans Day at a 10:30 a.m. ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 10 in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room. A reception immediately followed the ceremony.

The ceremony was sponsored by the Veterans Outreach Center, and the reception was sponsored by the President’s Office.

Western students, faculty and staff and community members are invited to a Veterans Day Ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10 in Western Washington University’s Viking Union Multipurpose Room.

A reception will immediately follow the ceremony.  Both events are free and open to the public.
