UW regents call for state funding reform; approve 16% tuition rise

The state funding system for higher education is essentially broken, the University of Washington's regents board declared Thursday after passing a 16 percent tuition increase for in-state undergraduates this fall. The board approved a strongly worded declaration that called for reform of state finances and revenue. The move marks the first time the 10-member board has spoken in a forceful, unified voice about higher-education budget cuts.
