Bainbridge Islander Claire Nitsche competed alongside national equestrian riders this month and finished in the top 10 in the country. Nitsche has been impressing judges while riding on the Western Washington University Equestrian Team, enough to earn her a spot on a tight list of other riders competing at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association’s national competition in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on May 2-5.

When the student newspaper adviser at Western Washington University asked us to meet with his students in Bellingham last week, he wanted us to talk about our careers and the changing newspaper industry. Convince them there is a future in journalism, he said. Inspire them. Hopefully we accomplished some of that, but more than anything, the students inspired us.

More than half of recent college graduates in Washington state enter the stiff job market more than $20,000 in debt. But now, many universities are launching online courses, some even for free. Starting this fall, the University of Washington in Seattle will offer a degree in early childhood education and family studies, completely online. When the announcement was made, the UW touted its “low cost” of $7,000 a year.

Some 41-plus years have passed since the last time Rudy Thomas donned the basketball jersey of his alma mater, Western Washington University. Although his memories lack the level of detail they once did, the 68-year-old Thomas needed little spurring on to conjure what he remembers of the 1972 basketball team that finished fifth at the NAIA National Championship tournament. "We were some place we had never been before," Thomas said, referring to the team that was two wins away from a chance at the national championship.
