My April 7 column described a program at Bellingham Vet Center that helps veterans write about their time in the military, and included advice from Bellingham author Marcus Brotherton. After that article came out, I was asked about programs that help non-veterans preserve their life stories, too.

"Both my parents were from northern Philippines. I was born and raised in Seattle, Wash. When it gets overcast and drizzly here, I get nostalgic. I went to public and then Catholic school, fifth through eighth grade. High school was John F. Kennedy Catholic School in Seattle. My brother, 16 years older, died in 2000. My father, who died in 2008 at 97, was 52 when I was born. My mother is still living and will celebrate her 90th birthday in May, in the same home I grew up in. My sister-in-law and nieces live close by, but Mom still lives on her own."

The very public death of the Washington Dream Act has left those in Olympia who killed the legislation grasping for a way of explaining why they wouldn’t permit the state Senate even to vote on it. The latest line, peddled on a conservative radio talk show: Democrats’ purpose in sponsoring the legislation — aimed at making undocumented college students eligible for state financial aid — was to make Republicans look racist.

No one walking the halls of Olympia is surprised Washington's 147 lawmakers and governor will need a special session to finish their work. When it will begin and how long it will run is anyone's guess.

Washington House Democrats have trimmed their education improvements budget from almost $1.34 billion to $1.16 billion. That is in contrast the Republican-oriented Senate's $1 billion education fix-it proposal going into budget talks to begin later this week.
