Ross Macfarlane to speak on climate solutions May 23

Western Washington University will host a presentation by Ross Macfarlane titled “Climate Solutions in an Era of Consequences” as part of Western’s Huxley College of the Environment Speaker Series at 4 p.m. on May 23 in Western’s Biology Building room 212.

The presentation is free and open to the public. The presentation will include a question-and-answer period.

Retirement party for Liz Sipes is June 6

A retirement party to honor Liz Sipes, secretary to the Board of Trustees, will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, June 6, in the Old Main Solarium (OM 590) on the Western Washington University campus. Sipes will retire from the university in June, after 29 years of service.

Please join us to celebrate Liz’s many contributions to Western and to congratulate her on her retirement.

WWU advances to NCAA II national semifinals

Western Washington University used a tiebreaker to upset Florida Southern in a quarterfinal round of match play and advanced to the semifinals Thursday, May 23, at the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championships taking place at the Hershey Country Club East Course.

The No.8 seeded Vikings upended No.1 Florida Southern, with each team winning two of the five individual matches and tying the other. WWU won the quarterfinal via a total-stroke tiebreaker, which the Vikings claimed by six shots, 379 to 373. Typically, medal matches are decided by holes won.

Training available for use of myWestern

Western Washington University's portal designed for current employees and students, myWestern provides easy access to Western internal resources.

The Western website was modified recently to provide a window into Western for future students. Most of the old Western home page links that employees and students use were moved to myWestern.

$18 increase of services and activities fee to be discussed at May 23 meeting

The Services and Activities Fee Committee at Western Washington University will hold an open hearing to discuss the proposed Services and Activities Fee level and distribution for 2013-14 at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 23, in Viking Union Room 567.

The committee proposes an S&A Fee increase of $18 per year and proposes that the available revenue from the fee be distributed as follows:

Western Libraries to hold preview of withdrawn materials

As part of its regular review process of library materials at Western Washington University, Western Libraries will be holding a faculty review of materials that have been withdrawn from the library collection over the past quarter.

Most of these resources are being withdrawn because they are either duplicated in the library’s collections or have been superseded by newer editions. A few others are being withdrawn because library faculty consider them no longer needed for the collections.

Executive director of Canadian-American Business Council will attend reception May 23 on campus

Professor Christopher Sands and the Center for International Business Western Washington University are pleased to welcome Maryscott “Scotty” Greenwood, the executive director of the Canadian-American Business Council, to campus Thursday, May 23.

Greenwood will be the guest of honor at the Canadian-American Business Networking Reception from 5 to 7 p.m. in Viking Union Room 464.

This event is free and open to all students and the public. Appetizers and wine will be served.

Spring commencement set for June 15 at WWU

Spring commencement activities at Western Washington University will take place campus-wide all day on Saturday, June 15.

The main ceremonies are at 9 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Carver Gymnasium.

Line-up is in Red Square, and additional viewing is in the SMATE Building and Arntzen Hall.

Additional smaller ceremonies and receptions will take place in the afternoon in the Old Main Theater, Performing Arts Center, Miller Hall Collaborative Space and Fairhaven Lounge.
