The Associated Students Campus Christian Fellowship club will host “Classy Christmas Formal,” a Christmas celebration, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, at Hillcrest Chapel, located at 1400 Larrabee Ave.

The event is free and open to anyone interested in attending. There will be food, karaoke, pictures with Santa, a video contest and a Christmas service. Formal or black-and-white attire is encouraged.

Western Washington University and the Center for Service-Learning are offering a course on rural Kenya this summer. The class, “Kenya: Field Studies and Collaborative International Service-Learning,” will be held during the nine-week Summer Session 2011, including six weeks on the ground in rural Kenya.

An information session will be held at 4 p.m. Dec. 1 in Communications Facility Room 227 on the WWU campus to present details of the program.

Just over one year ago, Bellingham's Whatcom Middle School burned in a devastating fire that destroyed the building. Now, as the oldest existing school building in the Bellingham School District rises from the ashes, Whatcom has been named one of five finalists in the national School Pride Web Competition Contest.

The contest's grand prize is a complete computer lab makeover, consisting of 25 new computers and $2,250 for the school.

On Tuesday morning, Nov. 23, workers from Dawson Construction will place the concrete subfloor for the radiant heat panel in the new courtyard collaboration space in Miller Hall.

A concrete pump truck will be stationed on the east side of the building and with an attached boom and hoses will pump the concrete over the building into the collaboration space.

On Nov. 8, 1935, Charles Kingsford Smith, called "the greatest aviator in Australia's history," took off for the last time, on a flight from England to Australia. Despite countless searches over the years, his exact crash site remains a mystery.

The Associated Students Resource and Outreach Programs Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Alliance is holding its "Hom(o)coming" dance at 8 p.m. on Dec. 3 in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room.

The semi-formal event costs $1 for Western students with ID and $3 for general admission and is open to the public. The theme is "Fire and Ice."

The Western Washington University Bellingham Business Forum raised nearly $20,000 for student scholarships at the event Nov. 17.

More than 300 people attended the annual forum, which featured keynote speaker Jim Donald, president and CEO of Haggen Inc. WWU President Bruce Shepard, Rick Haggen, co-chairman of Haggen Inc., and Ted Mischaikov, past president of the WWU Foundation board, also spoke at the forum attended by many local and area leaders in business and government.

The Associated Students club WWU DECA will be giving back to the community at noon on Nov. 21 during its “Adopt-A-Hood Club Clean-Up” event.

DECA invites anyone interested in helping with the cleanup to meet at the north end of the south-campus C lots on Western’s campus.

The club will be cleaning up a neighborhood north of Western’s campus in an effort to get rid of messes that may be left after weekend parties. Gloves and bags will be provided.

The Associated Students Student Senate is hosting a panel discussion "Is Bellingham Safe? The facts on law enforcement, crime and partying" about the safety of Bellingham in light of recent armed robberies. The event will take place from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 2, in Academic Instructional Center Room 204.

Topics to be discussed include crime trends in Bellingham and on Western’s campus, what students can do to stay safe and the party bus.
