Scott Pearce, Faculty Senate president, called the 2010-2011 Faculty Senate to order at 4:02 p.m. Senators accepted senate minutes of Oct. 25, 2010, along with the standing committee minutes.

Pearce reported that meetings on the white paper on nursing will happen this fall, and a meeting on International Studies will happen in January. Pearce also reported that the Senate Library Committee plans to work again on a new charge to develop the role of the committee within the library as well as its interaction with other governance units.

Dozens of Western Washington University staff, faculty and students continue to wear red every Friday in support of U.S. troops serving overseas. Group members have pledged to continue the practice until all troops return home.

Kelly Lee, a professor in the medicinal chemistry and microbiology departments at the University of Washington, will present "Architecture of a Nascent Viral Fusion Pore" at 3:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in Chemistry Building Room 386.

Refreshments will be served at 3 p.m. in Chemistry Building Room 275. This presentation, which is part of the Chemistry Department Seminar Series, is free and open to the public.

The Center for Instructional Innovation & Assessment at WWU is currently accepting nominations for this year's Innovative Teaching Showcase through Dec. 10.

Each year the CIIA works with selected WWU instructors to document and publish their innovative instruction online. This year's showcase theme, "Teaching for Tolerance," seeks to honor faculty members who aspire to address inclusion, diversity and difference in their courses in a variety of ways, such as:

The annual campus holiday party is being planned for 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room.

The event will feature food and pet food donations, entertainment, a 50/50 drawing and more. Invitations will be sent to the WWU community via e-mail after the Thanksgiving break.

Larry Estrada, a faculty member from Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, will talk at noon today on "Statelessness, Race and Identity in the Dominican Republic." Estrada's presentation is part of the Center for International Studies' International Studies Lecture Series.

Seattle-based sustainable development advocate and author Anindita Mitra will speak at 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12 in Communication Facility Room 105 on Western Washington University’s campus.

The talk is part of WWU Huxley College of Environment Speaker Series and is free and open to the public.

Bellingham Police are investigating two armed robberies that occurred in the Happy Valley neighborhood just south of the Western Washington University campus on Monday, Nov. 8.

The first incident occurred around 9 a.m. in the vicinity of 25th Street and Taylor Avenue. A female WWU student was robbed of her backpack by an armed individual described as an Asian male in his 20s, with short hair, about 5’8” tall, wearing blue jeans, a gray sweatshirt and a blue jacket.

UPDATE: Police have searched the entire area south of campus where armed robberies occurred at 4 p.m. today and earlier this morning. No suspects have been located. Police patrols are continuing into the night. Evening classes are continuing as scheduled. Students and faculty are advised to remain indoors and when traveling outside to walk in groups and to remain in well-lighted areas.

The Bellingham Herald is reporting an armed robbery that ended with a female victim possibly shot near the trail system off South College Way and Bill McDonald Parkway near Buchanan Towers about 4 p.m. Monday.

The robbery occurred on a trail near 23rd Street and Douglas Avenue. A helicopter was circling the area, and police had called in a search dog. A suspect is not in custody.

Police were moving units into position just after 4 p.m., minutes after the robbery was reported.
