The folks in Academic Technology and User Services at Western Washington University have been seeing a lot of suspicious e-mail messages lately. To that end, they sent out a warning via e-mail this morning containing a few things to watch out for:

Winter quarter Viking Xpress bus passes for Western Washington University fculty and staff are now available. The passes, which cost $23, can be purchased through the Sustainable Transportation office.

Winter quarter passes are valid from Jan. 3 to March 27.

Just one opportunity remains in fall quarter to win the Alumni Association's Traveling Goodie Basket. The basket will be making the rounds next Wednesday, Dec. 8.

To be eligible to win the goodie basket, send photos of your office dressed in Western gear to alumni@wwu.edu by 10 a.m. on the goodie basket date. Creativity is encouraged, and all goodie basket winners are entered in a drawing for a catered lunch.

The winning department will be announced at the campus holiday party on Dec. 8.

Just two weeks remain in which to order a "Best of Western" cheesecake for the holiday season. There's a special $15 offer for Western Washington University staff and faculty who order during December. Cheesecake orders placed by 5 p.m. each Wednesday will be available for pick up at 9 a.m. Friday of that week in the Alumni House.

The deadline for ordering is 5 p.m. Dec. 15, and the last day for pickup is Friday, Dec. 17.

Money is available to fund undergraduate students' research and creative projects. Grant applications are due Jan. 27.

The objective of the grant program is to provide encouragement for undergraduate students to engage in creative work in their disciplines and to provide some funds which may make it possible for them to do so.

The competition is open to any registered undergraduate student in good standing, and grants are normally awarded in the range of $100 to $500 per project. The program is designed to support individual student projects only.

Whatcom Middle School has been announced as the winner of the national School Pride Web Competition Contest sponsored by NBS and Microsoft.

Just over one year ago, Bellingham's Whatcom Middle School burned in a devastating fire that destroyed the building. Now, as the oldest existing school building in the Bellingham School District rises from the ashes, Whatcom will get a complete computer lab makeover consisting of 25 new computers and $2,250 for the school.

Western Washington University’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents its student-choreographed "Fall Into Dance" concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3 and 4, in the Performing Arts Center Mainstage Theater.

WWU faculty and staff are invited to attend a free preview of the show at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, in the Mainstage Theater.

Amy Harder, a recent alumna of the journalism department at Western Washington University, appeared on C-SPAN's Washington Journal on Saturday, Nov. 27, to talk about the latest federal regulations and possible laws that will impact the coal industry.

Harder is a reporter for the National Journal Online. Saturday's show was Harder's first television experience. She was on air live for roughly 45 minutes chatting with the show's host and taking several calls.

By the end of business today, Nov. 30, Facilities Management crews working on the renovation of the central portion of Old Main will close the construction zone to public access. Because the area will be off-limits, any personal or business-related items will need to be removed from the area before 5 p.m. today.
