Nominations are being taken through June 27 for the Outstanding Classified Staff Award, which recognizes a single individual who exemplifies a positive and creative approach to problem solving and innovation that significantly advances departmental goals and/or university mission.

With the support of the president, the two classified staff unions on campus (WFSE and PSE) together select one of their members to receive this award, which is presented each year at opening convocation in the fall.

As spring quarter ends and much of campus starts thinking about their own summer plans, it’s a good time to let everyone know about what repair and construction work is planned for the summer. If you leave campus right after graduation and don’t return until fall, you might never even know some of this work happened!

Western Washington University will dedicate the Karen W. Morse Hall on Thursday, June 13.

On Dec. 14, Western’s Board of Trustees approved naming the university’s Chemistry Building after WWU President Emerita Karen W. Morse. A lecture hall in Western’s Science, Mathematics and Technology Education Building named after Joe Morse, a retired WWU chemistry professor and the first director of SMATE, also will be dedicated on June 13.

Students from Western Washington University received awards at the Region 10 Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Spring Conference held April 13 at Gonzaga University in Spokane.

Western students won six Mark of Excellence awards given to four-year college students, for their work at two of Western’s student-produced publications, The Western Front and Klipsun.

Western Libraries and the group Whatcom Therapy Dogs are teaming up once again for the quarterly Pet Partners program. Between June 3 and June 13 (Dead Week and Finals Week) dogs, cats and their owners will take over part of Wilson Library to provide a much-needed study break for Western Washington University students.

Western Washington University students, staff and faculty interested in participating in the 2013 Viking Supported Agriculture program can sign up now.

The VSA is Western's Community Supported Agriculture program, bringing students, staff and faculty in contact with Whatcom and Skagit County produce and producers.

By signing up, you will receive a box of local, fresh organic fruits and vegetables every Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. beginning June 20 through the next nine, 20, or 25 weeks, depending on your choice. Boxes will be dropped off outside of Carver Gym.

The Bellingham Police and University Police officers responded to a report of male exposing himself across from Buchanan Towers near Bill McDonald Parkway at about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday.

The suspect was described as a tall white male in his 30s, wearing dark clothing and a dark colored “beanie.” He had dark hair and scruffy facial hair. He followed the reporting person (a Western Washington University student) to a business near the intersection of 22nd Street and Douglas Avenue, where he was last seen.
