The Career Services Center at Western Washington University is putting on a panel discussion for students and graduates interested in exploring opportunities with AmeriCorps.

The panel, “AmeriCorps: the insider’s guide to everything you need to know,” will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in Viking Union Room 552. Panelists include current and former AmeriCorps members who have worked in a variety of programs.

The feature film "Everything Went Down," co-produced by Kacey Morrow, an assistant professor of new media design in the department of design at Western Washington University, is playing at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at the Pickford Cinema in Bellingham.

Western Washington University is again on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s list of the nation’s top 20 green energy purchasers in higher education.

Western, which is 19th on the EPA list, annually offsets 100 percent of its electrical consumption from green sources via purchases of renewable energy credits.

Western was the only college or university in the State of Washington on the recently released EPA list.

Western Washington University’s Woodring College of Education will host Woodring’s 15th Annual Educational Law and Social Justice Forum on Friday, May 17 at 4 p.m. in Miller Hall Room 005.

The forum is free and open to the public and is sponsored by Western’s Journal of Educational Controversy and its Center for Education, Equity and Diversity.

The theme of the forum will be “The School-to-Prison Pipeline and the School-to-Deportation Pipeline.”

A motivational speaker, Xerxes Whitney will present “Busting Through Your Challenges: Don’t Fight it. Embrace It” at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 20 in Miller Hall room 138 on Western Washington University’s campus.

The presentation is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by Western’s Physical Education, Health and Recreational Department; College of Humanities and Social Sciences; and Woodring College of Education.

Rachel Severson, a developmental psychologist at Western Washington University, will present “Growing Up Green: What Does Time in Nature Do for Your Child?” as part of Western’s Department of Psychology Family Academy outreach lecture series at 6 p.m. on May 30 at Brandywine Kitchen at 1317 Commercial St. in downtown Bellingham.

This presentation is free and open to the public.

Nominations are now being accepted for the Diversity Achievement Award at Western Washington University, which every year recognizes those who demonstrate outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion at Western.

Numerous initiatives are underway on campus to increase diversity and inclusion, and the annual award is part of that important movement, said Sue Guenter-Schlesinger, vice provost for Equal Opportunity and Employment Diversity at Western.

Karen Lee, a member of the Board of Trustees at Western Washington University, has been appointed by Washington Gov. Jay Inslee to the Washington Student Achievement Council, according to a press release from the governor's office.

The cabinet-level agency was formed in 2012 to oversee the state’s higher education system, provide strategic planning and advocacy for increased student success and to align pre-K-12 and post-secondary education opportunities.
