A farewell party to honor Roger Gilman, dean of Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, in the Old Main Solarium on the Western Washington University campus. Dean Gilman will be retiring from the university after seven years of service.

Provost Catherine Riordan invites the campus to celebrate Gilman’s contributions to Fairhaven College and Western and to congratulate him on his retirement.

On Friday, April 26, officials at Western Washington University conducted a test of the Western Alert system.

A problem was encountered with the building enunciation system so that only the lights flashed in most areas with no voice actuation. The cause has been identified, and the problem is being remedied.

A second issue, that some text messages sent were not received, is being worked on as well. All other components of Western Alert, including Big Ole, e-mail, Western homepage, Western emergency webpage, and social media feeds, worked well.

Back2Bellingham 2013 weekend from May 17 to 19 promises to be bigger and better yet again. This year also includes LivFest, EndFair and community service projects.

Attendees will be able to take tours of Woodring College of Education, the featured college of this year’s event, as well as attend classes without quizzes, enjoy entertainment on five stages and take tours and attend events off-campus as well.

The draft policy was reviewed by groups and individuals across camps and revised to reflect their input. A 30-day comment period is required prior to the final draft review by the president’s cabinet.

Western Washington University chemistry and engineering technology students helped companies in Bellingham and Seattle to develop testing applications for a spectral pattern identification device that recently won a prestigious Prism Award from SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.

Javelin LLC of Bellingham and Visualant Inc. of Seattle were awarded the SPIE Prism Award for Photonics Innovation for the ChromaID, which uses the light and the color spectrum to quickly and inexpensively analyze water, foods, drugs, soils and other substances.

Recent Western Washington University graduates were asked how well they thought their education at Western had prepared them for success in the job market.*

The results broken down by college show how graduates perceived the extent to which Western prepared them for success. Alumni graduating from Woodring College of Education reported high satisfaction with their level of preparedness for the job market. Reported satisfaction varies across the board.

How do kids understand robots? Are they like a living thing, an object, or somewhere in between?

Western Washington University researchers are inviting 9-year-old boys and girls to participate in a fun study at Western. In a one-hour session, children will get to play with a robot and a puppet, and researchers will ask what they think about each. For helping, children will receive $5 and a “WWU Young Scientist” T-shirt.

The Western Washington University Chapter Phi Kappa Phi Service Award will recognize a Western Washington University campus organization that exemplifies the mission of Phi Kappa Phi “May the love of Learning Rule Humanity” through a project completed in the 2012-2013 school year.

The deadline for nominations is May 1.
