The Services and Activities Fee Committee at Western Washington University will hold an open hearing May 17 to discuss the proposed Services and Activities Fee level and distribution for 2012-2013.

The hearing will take place at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 17, in Viking Union Room 567.

Recent developments throughout the state in the adoption of the learning management system Canvas suggest that the technology also may be beneficial to Western Washington University.

In a presentation titled "Global Literature: How Learning About 'Over There' Helps Us Understand 'Over Here'," award-winning University of Washington professor Anu Taranath will use examples from global literature to showcase this extraordinary body of talented writing and to suggest ways of reading that invite conversation on often difficult topics of power, privilege, voice and agency.

Taranath will speak from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 21, in Fairhaven College Room 340.

Faculty and staff bus passes for summer quarter are now on sale. The $40 passes will be valid for use beginning June 18.

Betsy Wilson, dean of the University of Washington Libraries, will speaking on the Western Washington University campus at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 23, in Wilson Library Room 164. Wilson's talk is part of the Western Libraries' month-long series "Redefining the Academic Library."

Western Washington University presented its alumni awards to 10 individuals and a legacy family at its 2012 Alumni Awards Ceremony last night. The award winners span a wide range of accomplished alumni, including leaders in business, education, public health, performing arts, the environment, and human services.

The distinguished alumni gathered for another breakfast this morning with university leadership and will spend the day on campus giving lectures and meeting with faculty and staff from their respective colleges.

On a trial basis, University Dining Services is extending hours at a couple of on-campus dining establishments.

During the trial period of at least two weeks, Atrium Starbucks and POD Market will be open until 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Additionally, Zoe's Bookside Bagels is now open earlier at 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday.

The trial will run for at least one more week, with the potential of being extended through the end of the quarter.

Western Washington University's Theatre and Dance Department will present its annual Bachelor of Fine Arts Capstone Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, June 1 and 2, in room 16 of the Performing Arts Center.

The Capstone Concert showcases the dance program's BFA candidates in their culminating projects of performance and choreography. The candidates spend their final year working with a guest choreographer and creating a solo that artistically concludes their career at Western.

Workers are nearly finished with the renovation of the Old Main 110 suite, and the recently reorganized Student Business Office will move into the space on Tuesday, May 29. The work began in early March.

Award-winning fiction author Stacey Levine will read from her work at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, in room 110 of the Science, Mathematics and Technology Education (SMATE) building at Western Washington University.

The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by Western’s Department of English and the Cold Beverages Fund.
