The Western Washington University community is mourning the loss of WWU student Matthew Gaphni, a 21-year-old senior majoring in accounting from Bainbridge Island, who passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle following a brief illness.

A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2010, at The LDS Chapel on High School Road on Bainbridge Island (next to Ordway Elementary School). Interment will take place at Port Blakely Cemetery on Bainbridge Island. A reception will follow at the family home.

The Associated Students Resource and Outreach Progams Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Alliance (LGBTA) and Productions Films are co-sponsoring the annual showing of “Rocky Horror Picture Show” at 9 p.m. and midnight on Oct. 30 in Arntzen Hall Room 100. The event is open to the public and costs $1 for people in costume and $3 for non-costumed people.

“There will be scantily clad people, sexual innuendo and crude language,” said Josh Foley, coordinator of the Associated Students LGBTA. “Props are not provided.”

The Associated Students Productions Civil Controversy and Resource and Outreach Programs Sexual Awareness Center present “It’s My Choice: Abstinence and Sex in College Relationships” from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 4, in Academic Instructional Center West Room 403. This event is free.

This is the first in a series of dialogues on hot-topic issues related to college life. This dialogue will look at different experiences of abstinence and sex and how they relate to college relationships.

The latest issue of the Journal of Educational Controversy, from Woodring College of Education at Western Washington University, is now online.

The theme for Vol. 5, No. 2 of the journal is "The Professions and Scholarly Communities: Creating the Public’s Questions and Understandings in the Public Square."

On Oct. 20, the Vertically Integrated Partnership (including Annie’s Fun, Sodexo, Hirai Farms, National Frozen Foods, etc.) donated 8,000 pounds of sweet corn to the Bellingham Food Bank. Many students from Western Washington University and volunteers from Sodexo were on hand to help to unload the sweet corn. Following the 4-ton delivery of sweet corn in Bellingham, the truck took the remainder of the load (approximately 26 tons of sweet corn) to Food Lifeline in Shoreline.

Tika R. Armstrong passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2010, with her son, Spencer Carter, her lifetime friend Diane and Kevin Brearley by her side.

Tika was born Nov. 11, 1961, in San Diego and moved to Bellingham at the age of 6. Tika was preceded in death by her Dad, Robert "Bill" Armstrong, in 2010, and her mother, Phyllis "Sunny" (Sundseth), in 1993, and sister, Roxana, in 2002.

Students in the fall 2009 Art 495 Professional Practice class worked with the College of Business and Economics to create a photo installation that highlights the collegial environment and dynamic among students and professorsin CBE.

The project is now installed on the first-floor landing of Parks Hall. It is composed of 12 photographs that represent the six departments of the college and show the interaction of students and professors. The photographs are digital pigment prints on canvas, stretched on frames, and mounted to the wall. This is a permanent installation.

The state Department of Retirement Systems is offering seminars throughout the state to help employees plan their retirements. Those who are participating in either the PERS, TRS, or LEOFF retirement plans and are within five years of retirement are encouraged to review the seminar information online and register for an upcoming seminar. The retirement planning seminars are held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The Puget Sound Blood Center registered 547 donors during its blood drive on the Western Washington University campus Oct. 19 to 21.

That's an all-time high for WWU, said Prevention and Wellness' Catharine Vader, who has records dating back to 1972. Twenty percent of donors during the drive were first-time donors.

Each weekday, 900 people must donate blood to meet the needs of patients in western Washington hospitals, according to the blood center's Carol Rondello.
