The Central Health and Safety Committee at Western Washington University reminds the campus community of options that are available when they feel there is an unsafe or unhealthy situation on campus.

Concerns related to safety, health or compliance can be brought to supervisors or to the Environmental Health and Safety office. Many may not be aware, though, of the CHSC and its role in keeping the Western community healthy and safe.

Retired Investment Banker Paul Merriman, a Western Washington University alumnus, will present “Investing for Young Professionals” at 6 p.m. Monday, May 20, in Academic Instructional Center Room 210 on Western’s campus.

The presentation is open to all Western students and is part of Western’s College of Business and Economics Professional Readiness series and CBE Week. There will be a question-and-answer session after the presentation.

Since the Sustainability Academy formed in 2009 at Western Washington University, much has changed. The campus now has a course offering in sustainability literacy that introduces first- and second-year students to the multidisciplinary aspects of systems and integrative thinking. In addition, Provost Catherine Riordan has committed funds to furthering development of ideas. But more is happening.

Western Washington University Associate Professor of Environmental Studies David Rossiter will present “Aboriginal Land Claims and the Politics of a Pipeline” as part of Western’s Huxley College of the Environment Speaker Series at 4 p.m. on May 16 in Western’s Biology Building room 212.

The presentation is free and open to the public. The presentation will include a question-and-answer period.

RE Sources for Sustainable Communities plans to continue to highlight examples of successful stormwater management in Whatcom and Skagit Counties with a June 3 tour of the stormwater treatment system for the Western Washington University's south campus. The purpose of these tours is to showcase successful stormwater treatment systems and best management practices for pollution prevention, make new connections, and get inspired about clean water.

The nomination deadline for the Diversity Achievement Award has been extended to May 24.

The annual award recognizes an individual (student, faculty or staff) or office whose distinguished efforts have enhanced diversity and multicultural understanding at Western.

Nominees must meet one or more of the following criteria:

TEDxWWU is an independently organized TEDx event coming to Western Washington on University June 1. Held at the Performing Arts Center, TEDxWWU will be centered around the idea of "Renovations: Building Our Future." Hosted by Student Outreach Services, TEDxWWU hopes to inspire, inform and encourage PELL eligible, first-generation and underrepresented students to take action and ownership over their education.

Karen Stout, Faculty Senate president, called senators to order at 4:04 p.m. Senators accepted Senate minutes of April 22, 2013, and standing committee minutes. The minutes of the April 16 Academic Coordinating Commission were approved in two separate votes.

During Scholars Week 2013 at Western Washington University, the Center for International Studies will play host to Western faculty and students from a variety of disciplines as they share their field research, global experiences and service learning objectives gained while participating on faculty-led programs in Greece and South Africa.

The Services and Activities Fee Committee at Western Washington University will meet at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, May 16, in Viking Union Room 567.
