In its 2012 survey of incoming freshmen, the Office of Survey Research at Western Washington University asked students to step back to when they were completing their college applications and recall what college was their first choice to attend.

More than half of Western’s freshmen considered Western to be their first choice of schools. Second was the University of Washington.

This list shows the 19 most frequently cited “first choice” schools by Western freshmen.

The annual Associated Students info fair in Red Square is scheduled for Sept. 23 and 24 at Western Washington University. The event introduces incoming or returning students to the resources, programs and activities on campus and in the community.

The Equal Opportunity Office at Western Washington University is in the process of compiling an update of Western's Diversity Handbook. To date, the office has received responses from just 25 percent of previous submitters.

The latest edition of the handbook, along with contact people and the submission form for new entries, is available on the EOO website.

As family members travel to Western Washington University’s spring commencement on Saturday, June 15, and as WWU students depart for the summer, drivers can expect delays of 30 to 45 minutes along detours through Burlington and Mount Vernon around the Interstate 5 Skagit River Bridge collapse.

State transportation officials say the I-5 bridge over the Skagit River is expected to reopen sometime next week, after workers finish installing a temporary span to replace the portion of the bridge that collapsed May 23.

Steve Hollenhorst, dean of Western’s Huxley College of the Environment, will also serve as interim director of Shannon Point Marine Center in Anacortes. Steve Sulkin, SPMC director for the past 28 years, is retiring during the summer.

The rise of cyber-attacks coupled with a shortage of trained cybersecurity professionals is creating serious consequences for individuals, corporations and government agencies seeking to protect sensitive information. In response to the emerging demand, Whatcom Community College and Western Washington University’s College of Sciences and Technology are working together in one of the nation’s few community college-to-university cybersecurity collaborations.

This fall, Western Washington University’s Extended Education will offer “Professional Editing: For Print and Online,” a nine-month program that gives participants a broad knowledge of techniques used in a variety of editing positions.

The program will benefit those who want to work as freelance editors, publication staff members or authors of their own print and online projects.

Western Washington University student Joe Meyer (Economics and Environmental Studies, Seattle) was a member of a team that won “Best Cleantech Idea” and $2,500 in the University of Washington’s Business Plan Challenge.

“The project is a lot of what Huxley [College of the Environment] has been teaching in classes on making environmental and social benefits,” Meyer said. “It shows promise that business leaders are taking time out of their day to review and judge these plans as potential business models.”
