Western Libraries to put on 'Catching a Map Thief' whodunit lecture Oct. 5

Village Books and the Western Washington University Libraries are pleased to present WWU Connections, a brown bag speaker series highlighting the expertise of WWU faculty and staff. At noon on the first Tuesdays of October, November, and December, join the Western Libraries at Village Books for engaging presentations and discussion.

The first event, titled "Catching a Map Thief," will take place at noon on Tuesday, Oct. 5, with  WWU Librarian Rob Lopresti.

Associated Students to hold discussion Oct. 7 on upcoming ballot issues

The Associated Students will play host to “Booze, Taxes and Democracy: Washington’s ballot initiatives,” a moderated discussion, from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 7 in Arntzen Hall Room 100. The event is free and open to the public.

The event will discuss four initiatives on the upcoming Washington State ballot that will have direct impact on students' lives. The initiatives to be discussed are:

WWU's Annual Security and Fire Safety Report now available online

A copy of Western Washington University's 2010-2011 Annual Security and Fire Safety Report is now available online. Posting of this report is required by Oct. 1 each year as part of the Federal Government's “Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.”

Clint Spiegel to speak on graduate school at event today in Chemistry Building

Clint Spiegel, an assistant professor of Chemistry at Western Washington University, will present "Who, What, When, Where and How of Graduate School" at 3:15 p.m. today, Oct. 1, in Chemistry Building Room 386. This will be an open discussion forum, the purpose of which is to provide students with information about the graduate school decision process.

Refreshments will be provided at a Kick-Off Reception from 3 to 3:15 p.m. in the building's new conference room(CB Room 275). All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Search for Dwight Clark continues in Bellingham

Officers from the Bellingham Police Department have set up a mobile precinct in the 1200 block of Railroad Avenue in downtown Bellingham as the search for missing Western Washington University student Dwight Clark continues. Police will be using the mobile precinct tonight and tomorrow night to conduct interviews and follow leads. The police held a briefing with volunteers at 10 o'clock this morning.

Anyone with information to share regarding Clark's disappearance should call 911.

Budget discussion Friday to be audiocast live online

A Friday, Oct. 1, meeting on campus to discuss the proposals for further reductions to Western Washington University's current year operating budget will be audiocast live online.

The meeting, which will include WWU President Bruce Shepard, the WWU planning unit chairs (all deans and vice presidents) and the chair of the University Planning and Resources Council, is to review, question and discuss the proposals, which were released to campus on Monday.

WWU student Dwight Clark still missing

Western Washington University student Dwight Clark still is missing, and the search continues near the WWU campus, according to a Western Alert message sent from University Police Chief Randy Stegmeier Tuesday afternoon.

A search is continuing near campus and in the community for a Western Washington University student who on Sunday evening was reported missing.

WWU alum to show documentary film about young adults with cancer Oct. 7 in Bellingham

Western Washington University alumnus Fred Sprinkle, along with a collection of local filmmakers, will show his full-length documentary film "Wrong Way to Hope - A Story of Young Adults with Cancer" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, at the Mt. Baker Theater in Bellingham.

Tickets cost $10 and are available online at http://www.handsonfilms.com.

Scott Pearce, Faculty Senate president, called the 2010-2011 Faculty Senate to order at 4:01 p.m. Senators accepted senate minutes of June 2, 2010, and UPRC Committee minutes of June 2, 2010.

KVIK to hold filmmaking scavenger hunt at WWU

In the span of 24 hours, teams of filmmakers will attempt to complete a set of scavenger hunt tasks, as well as film, produce and edit a film with a coherent plot in the Associated Students KVIK scavenger hunt.

The teams will have from 10 a.m. on Oct. 16 to 10 a.m. on Oct. 17 to complete their films. The hunt will take place all over campus and surrounding areas of Bellingham, but the final leg of the hunt will take place in the AIC building.
