Karen Stout, Faculty Senate president, called senators to order at 4:04 p.m. Senators accepted Senate minutes of April 22, 2013, and standing committee minutes. The minutes of the April 16 Academic Coordinating Commission were approved in two separate votes.

During Scholars Week 2013 at Western Washington University, the Center for International Studies will play host to Western faculty and students from a variety of disciplines as they share their field research, global experiences and service learning objectives gained while participating on faculty-led programs in Greece and South Africa.

In celebration of Scholars Week at Western Washington University, the Center for International Studies invites the Western community to hear from two international students about their cultural adjustments and studies at Western.

The presentations will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 16, in Miller Hall Room 258. This event is free and open to the public.

Professor Christopher Sands and the Center for International Business are pleased to welcome the president of Riverhead Strategies, Sam Armstrong, to campus Tuesday, May 14.

Armstrong will give a presentation titled “Is Political Change Coming in British Columbia and Alberta? What Voters Want Next” at noon in Viking Union Room 567.

Open to all students and the public. Space is limited.

Western Washington University’s College of Sciences and Technology will continue its Wizards @ Western youth lecture series with “Metal Mayhem” at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 11 in Science and Math Lecture Hall 150 on WWU’s campus.

The event is free and open to the public, and is geared toward children in grades 4-8.

Western Washington University’s College of Business and Economics will host Saul Weisberg for its Ethics and Social Responsibility Executive Strategy Speaker Series at 3 p.m. on May 10 in Western’s Communications Facility Room 115.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Weisberg is the executive director and co-founder of the North Cascades Institute, a nationally recognized nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve and restore Northwest environments through education.

Do you know any future Viking athletes? Western Athletics is inviting all Vikings ages 8-13 to work on their skills, discover their passion and show off their stuff. Best part? It’s with Western’s athletes and coaches, including some of the Men’s and Women’s National Tournament players. All happening during Back2Bellingham weekend May 17-19.

There will be clinics on basketball, volleyball and soccer with some of the region’s top intercollegiate athletes. All skill levels are welcome.

Students participating in the Asia University America Program at Western Washington University are proud to present Japan Night from 7 to 9 p.m. today, May 9, in the Viking Union Multi-Purpose Room on campus.

Visitors can enjoy festival games, a tour of Japan, origami, calligraphy, sushi-rolling, traditional clothing, chopsticks etiquette, making Japanese headbands, and a booth where they can bring their Japanese books or manga to trade with others.

Western Washington University’s Woodring College of Education will offer a new online course for educators in its Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages certificate program.

Spanish Language for Teachers (TESL 497F) is an online course designed for educators and community members who seek the opportunity to begin or improve their Spanish language skills to better communicate with students and families.
