Ari Kelman, an associate professor of History at the University of California (Davis), will present “A Misplaced Massacre: Struggling Over the Memory of Sand Creek” at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, in Communications Facility Room 110 on Western Washington University’s campus.

The presentation is free and open to the public. It is hosted by the history department at Western.

Western Washington University’s Department of Music will present a concert by the instrument group “Collegium Musicum” at 8 p.m. on May 11 in Western’s Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The Collegium Musicum plays music from the Medieval period through the Classical era.

Western Washington University Assistant Professor of Economics Phil Thompson will give a presentation titled “Some Observations on U.S. Energy Markets and Prices” at 4 p.m. May 2 in Western’s Biology Building Room 212.

The presentation is part of Western’s Huxley College of the Environment Speaker Series and free and open to the public.

In his talk, Thompson will describe the basic features of U.S. energy markets and past energy policies, emphasizing the role of incentives and prices in the decisions made by energy producers and energy users.

Bellingham Technical College’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences program has announced an articulation (transfer) agreement with Western Washington University’s Huxley College of the Environment. This partnership will continue BTC and WWU efforts to prepare stewards of the environment and resources.

On April 20, a team of students from Western Washington University’s College of Business and Economics were named national finalists at the 2013 Collegiate DECA International Conference in Anaheim, Calif.

Three thousand programs across the country competed, 200 were chosen and the public determined the top 40. And Western Washington University’s Compass 2 Campus youth mentoring program was declared a $25,000 winner in State Farm Neighborhood Assist™.

Western Washington University is working with the Whatcom County Opportunity Council to collect school supplies for Whatcom County schoolchildren from families who are homeless or have very low incomes. Western students are collecting supplies to help children get ready and excited for school. Donations will be distributed by the Readiness to Learn programs throughout schools in Whatcom County.

Folks who'd like to donate may purchase school supplies at a discounted rate at the Associated Students Bookstore during Back2Bellingham weekend May 17 to 19.

A tribute to Marc Richards will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, in Viking Union Room 565 to remember and honor his life. All are invited.

But we need your help! The WWU Alumni Association is gathering memories, stories and favorite conversations of this beloved professor who passed away too soon. In his 15-year career at WWU, Richards taught more than 8,000 students and was regarded as one of Western’s most popular professors.

Governor Jay Inslee has directed that the flags at all Washington state agency facilities be lowered to half-staff on Friday, May 3, in recognition of the annual Medal of Honor and Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony.

Flags should remain at half-staff on Saturday, May 4, in memory of U.S. Army Captain Aaron R. Blanchard, 32, of Selah, who died on April 23 in Afghanistan of injuries sustained from indirect fire.

Flags should remain at half-staff until sunset/close of business on Saturday, May 4, or first thing Monday morning, May 6.
