Timothy Egan, award-winning author and columnist with the New York Times, received Western Washington University’s honorary doctorate degree at winter commencement Saturday, March 17, in Carver Gymnasium.

Egan also gave the commencement address; graduating senior Bethany Fromong of Enumclaw will gave the student address.

The Skyviewing Sculpture in Red Square, installed in 1969 by famed artist Isamu Noguchi, enjoys special contrast on a snowy day.

Western Washington University alumnus TJ Martin, who won an Academy Award on Sunday for his feature-length documentary "Undefeated," visited the WWU campus on Thursday, March 1, to visit with the campus community and screen the film.

He spoke in a class and in the Fairhaven Auditorium in the morning, sandwiched around a lunch visit with students. Later, after several media interview sessions, he screened his film to a packed house in the Performing Arts Center, where he was treated to two standing ovations.

Social activist Ericka Huggins was on campus Wednesday, Feb. 28, to speak as part of about racial, class, gender and sexual identities and the importance of finding and loving oneself on the road to universal acceptance. Formerly of the Black Panther Party during the 1960s and '70s, Huggins has witnessed many societal issues that she says need changing; she stresses that people look at everyone as a singular human race, rather than using cultural definitions for race, to help bring the world together.

The Associated Students Publicity Center has turned 21! The office celebrates with an exhibit of its best student-created posters from the past two decades; the free show continues through Friday, March 2, on the fourth floor of the Viking Union.
