Publications, grants, conferences and awards

Jonathan Miran, an associate professor in the Department of Liberal Studies at Western Washington University, has accepted an invitation to join the editorial board of the journal "Arabian Humanities" together with leading international Middle East studies scholars. "Arabian Humanities" is a new peer-reviewed on-line journal published under the auspices of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France.

 

Western Washington University professors Gene Myers (Environmental Studies) and Keith Russell (PEHR) wrote separate chapters in the recently published "The Oxford Handbook of Environmental and Conservation Psychology" from Oxford University Press. Myers' chapter, titled "Children and nature," runs from page 113 to page 127. Russell's chapter, "The therapeutic use of nature," runs on pages 428 through 445.

Sean Murphy, an associate professor in the Department of Liberal Studies, published an article on "William of Auvergne" (an early 13th-century bishop of Paris) in "Christian-Muslim Relations: A Bibliographical History," Vol. 4 (1200-1350), published by Brill.

Daniel Larner, a professor in Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, had his essay “Understanding Tragedy in Five O’Neill Plays” published in Critical Insights: Eugene O’Neill, ed. Steven Bloom. Salem Press, 2012.

Linda Keeler, a sport and exercise psychology faculty member in the Physical Education, Health and Recreation Department, co-authored an article with a former graduate student titled "Examination of a hazing workshop intervention for intercollegiate sport club athletes." The article was published in the Recreational Sports Journal, Vol. 36, pp. 113-126.

Western Washington University students who complete leadership e-portfolios illustrate some of the same principles and practices as artists in the process of producing their art.

Jennifer Karchmer's professional website was named "Writing Website of the Week" by Writer's Digest for the week of Oct. 8 to 15, 2012.

Karchmer is a senior instructor in the Department of Communication at Western Washington University.

Joseph E. Garcia, Bowman Distinguished Professor of Leadership Studies and Director of the Karen W. Morse Institute for Leadership at Western Washington University, delivered an invited session titled “Leading Change” at the Annual Conference of the Society for the Advancement of Native American and Chicano/Hispanic Scientists (SACNAS) in Seattle on Oct. 13.

Johann Neem (History) has had his article "A University without Intellectuals: Western Governor's University and the Academy's Future" published in the Fall 2012 issue of the journal "Thought & Action."

Sean Murphy, an associate professor in the Department of Liberal Studies at Western Washington University, presented “‘Why Shouldn’t We Observe the Law?’: The Challenge of Matthew 5:17 in Twelfth-Century Intellectual Culture” at the International Medieval Congress, University of Leeds, England, July 9 to 12.
