Eric Kean, a viola professor at Western Washington University, and pianist David Brooks, a recent soloist with the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra and a former WWU music student, team up to pay tribute to viola virtuoso William Primrose in an event titled "The Virtuosic Violist" at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, in the Rotunda Room of the Whatcom Museum.

Featured works include the dazzling La Campanella, by Paganini-Primrose, and Sarasateana, a Suite of Spanish Dances.

Aaron Katz, a health policy expert and faculty member in the University of Washington’s Department of Global Health, will deliver the winter quarter Global Health and Social Justice lecture at Western Washington University.

The lecture, which is titled “Health Care Reform (or what passes for that in Congress),” will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, at St. Luke’s Community Health Education Center Room C. The center is located at 3333 Squalicum Parkway in Bellingham.

Janet Finlay, director of the Behavioral Neuroscience Program at Western Washington University, will take audience questions on mental health and genetics at the monthly Neuroscience on Tap gathering at Bob's Burgers & Brew in downtown Bellingham.

Finlay, an associate professor of psychology at WWU, says these regular gatherings are a great way for community members to get answers to common problems from faculty members. In addition to the host, a number of faculty members typically attend these informal meetings, she says.

Charles Sylvester, a professor in the Physical Education, Health and Recreation Department at Western Washington University, is curious about why. He’ll discuss the topic of work and leisure – including a few ways Americans might harmonize the two – at a public lecture from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the Bellingham City Hall Chambers in downtown Bellingham.

There are many reasons for American’s ambivalence toward work and leisure, Sylvester says.

The Associated Students Outdoor Center at Western Washington University will play host to “Birds of Whatcom County” at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14.

This event provides an opportunity for individuals to learn more about bird-watching in Whatcom County. Pile in the van with Outdoor Center experts to explore Bald Eagle convergences, rare Marbled Murrelet habitat and estuaries offering a rest stop for migrating birds.

Tickets are $20 for students with I.D. and $30 for guests.
