As I grew up, I dreamt of being many things, including an astronaut. I was fortunate to attend schools (in Minnesota) that encouraged, challenged and prepared me for success in college, work and beyond, and in 1978 realized my childhood dream, eventually flying on three NASA space missions. When I retired from NASA, I chose to dedicate myself to improving the education system. Schools should help each student obtain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to stay in school and pursue whatever path they might choose after high school graduation, be it an astronaut or auto technician.

During summer vacation, some teachers took time away from sipping lemonade to plan for the now-here school year in a special way. Living at Lake Crescent for one week in late-July, teachers from Greywolf Elementary School participated in an event sponsored by the Olympic Park Institute.

Now, more than ever, science, technology and mathematics need to be at the forefront of what we as a society deem to be important as we educate our young people, from grade school through graduate school. In sports terms, we used to be the dominant team; if this were a sports competition the odds makers might not give us a chance.
First, our universities must grow their outreach programs to reach the potential members of the next generation of scientists and engineers, particularly women and minorities, early on and keep them involved as they advance through the K-12 system.

Three Ferndale students were recognized Saturday for their academic achievements in math, science and technology by the Bellingham branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

From 11 Whatcom County schools, 30 outstanding students selected by their educators were honored during the eighth-annual event, including Ferndale’s Inga Holmdahl for math, Erin Weisenhorn for science, and Haley Grunhurd for technology.

The event was cosponsored by Western Washington University’s College of Sciences and Technology as well as BP Cherry Point Refinery.

The elite group of legendary American space heroes now includes George “Pinky” Nelson ’72.
George was inducted, along with fellow astronauts William Shepherd and Jim Wetherbee, into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame during a public ceremony at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida on May 2.
