In 2008, Western Washington University journalism professor John Harris received a $5,000 grant from the Lummi Nation. With that grant, he created a photo blog focusing on the Lummi Blackhawk football team during the 2008 and 2009 seasons.

In this video, John reflects on his blog, explains how his experience has influenced his teaching and expresses his goals and visions for the future of the blog and his hope to continue to tell the story of the Lummi Blackhawks.

Carolyn Nielsen, an assistant professor in the Department of Journalism at WWU, presents "El Progreso del Periodismo: the Growing Presence of Spanish-language News Media in the U.S." regarding her research into the history and current state of U.S. Spanish-language news media. While many news outlets struggle to survive, their Spanish-language counterparts are thriving. Language is not the only factor in audience growth and loyalty.

Sheila Webb (Journalism) received the First Place Faculty Paper Award in the Magazine Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication at the annual convention in August in Boston. The award was for Webb's paper "The Creation of Community in Reiman Magazines–A Reader Reception Study." The paper is part of a continuing study on the Reiman Co. magazines. The Reiman Company produces 12 magazines on food, home and gardening with a "country" bent.

Western Washington University’s student-produced magazine “The Planet” won two awards in a recent national contest put on by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).

The magazine won third place for general excellence among 17 entries and received an honorable mention for design among 15 entries.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer's print death has spawned at least two local initiatives to launch new Web sites devoted to in-depth journalism, and to explore new ways to pay for it."These aren't the kind of stories you can do in a day or two," said Rita Hibbard, a former P-I assistant managing editor and spokeswoman for the group. "How do we keep this form alive? The need is still there." Hibbard said her group also has had detailed discussions with other universities about affiliation and support. Western Washington University was the only one she would identify.

Tacoma native Bill Dietrich, whose first full-time job was at The Bellingham Herald covering politics and state government, has been an assistant professor of environmental journalism at Western Washington University since 2006. He shared a Pulitzer prize for coverage of the Exxon Valdez oil spill and he's a winner of the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award and the Washington Governor Writer's Award. He's also a novelist; and he reads from his latest historical thriller, The Dakota Cipher, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, at Village Books.

At a time before government access television, Nancy Walbeck’s dedicated, passionate and in-depth reporting kept Fidalgo Island residents informed about city government, and during her 16-year career she elevated the profile of the arts in the community, say sources and co-workers who mourn the former Anacortes American reporter, who died at her Anacortes home of natural causes recently. She covered community news, government and, most passionately, arts. Her efforts won more than 40 awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association.
