For some, playing in the Olympics would be a lifelong dream. But who says you can only have one lifelong dream? Saratoga Springs native Kathleen Kauth, 30, said she is fulfilling another lifelong dream by having moved - the plan is temporarily - to California. The 2006 Olympic women's ice hockey player now lives in the Bay area and takes classes at the University of California at Berkley in solar energy and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. She started taking classes this past fall semester and will be done around Christmas.

The Kinesiology and Physical Education program in the Physical Education, Health and Recreation Department at Western Washington University will have senior kinesiology majors providing health/fitness tests during FIT-STEPS 2010 week Feb. 8 to 12.

Testing will include a blood pressure check, lung tests, a flexibility assessment and a measurement of body fat percentage. These tests are free and open to the public.

The 2010 Winter Olympics aren't until next month, but students and staff at Wade King Elementary School are already celebrating the international sporting event. On Tuesday, Jan. 26, students got a chance to participate in their own Olympic games and earn gold medals. And while ice skates and bobsleds were traded in for paper plates and scooters, respectively, students still got an understanding of what it would be like to be part of the rigorous competition. "It's hard to do those sports," said second-grader Emily Gaven. "It takes courage to do that kind of stuff."

Ralph Vernacchia (Physical Education, Health and Recreation) received the Dr. C. Harmon Brown Sports Medicine and Science Award at the 2009 USA Track and Field annual meeting held Dec. 5 in Indiannapolis. He was recognized for his dedication and contributions to sport science, particularly sport psychology, in the sport of track and field.

Priscilla Proctor, Coordinator of College and Public Relations reported to Historic City News that Dr. Allison Roberts, Flagler College assistant professor of economics, now holds the title of 2009 Waterford Crystal World Handball Champion. Roberts is both the single and doubles champion in the senior women age division, 35 and over, which was held October 4th through October 11th in Portland, Oregon.

He’ll discuss the topic of work and leisure – including a few ways Americans might harmonize the two – at a public lecture from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the Bellingham City Hall Chambers in downtown Bellingham.

There are many reasons for American’s ambivalence toward work and leisure, Sylvester says.

Joel Martin had no idea his future wife was a national handball champion when they first met in his Bellingham martial arts class, but the bloody nose she inadvertently gave him provided a tipoff she was pretty good in some sports. LeaAnn Martin, a longtime professor of physical education at Western Washington University, has amazing hand-eye coordination, as her future husband, an accomplished karate competitor, quickly learned.

Keith C. Russell (Physical Education, Health and Recreation) was an invited keynote speaker at the Fifth International Adventure Therapy Conference, held in Edinburgh, Scotland, from Sept. 8 to 11. Russell's speech was titled "Exploring an emergent dualism in adventure therapy practice." The International Adventure Therapy Conference is held every three years. It is sponsored by the British Association for Counseling Psychotherapy and attended by psychologists, psychiatrists, academics and adventure therapy practitioners from 22 countries.
