Jonathan Addleton, the U.S. ambassador to Mongolia, visited Western’s campus on Thursday, March 4. He met with Western faculty, staff and students and toured the campus.

“We were pleased to welcome Ambassador Addleton to the Western campus and to share with him some of the innovative teaching and research activities taking place here in International Studies generally and with specific regard to Mongolia,” said Doug Nord, director of Western’s Center for International Studies.

Eighteen Western Washington University students studying abroad for a semester in the Dominican Republic worked last week to pack more than 5,000 emergency care packets headed to neighboring Haiti. Each packet is designed to feed a family for a week. Western's Larry Estrada, a professor at Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies who is in charge of the program in the Dominican Republic, said in a university press release that the students worked with the emergency-relief arm of the German government, GTZ, to help assemble the packets.

The Asia University America Program at Western Washington University is recruiting International Peer Advisors for the 2010-2011 academic year. IPAs are trained to advise AUAP students (from Asia University in Tokyo, Japan) as they acclimate to life in the residence halls and the WWU/Bellingham community. IPAs reside on campus and work for 19hours per week.

Western Washington University’s annual International Opportunities Fair will take place on campus from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room on campus. Nearly 1,000 students are expected to attend the largest campus-wide event dedicated to providing information about work, volunteer, study and internship positions abroad. Information also will be available on the ample opportunities for people to get involved in international issues locally.

The presentation integrates the survey results Slentz has obtained during her research into childrens behavior, school and family life in rural areas of Kenya.

Marie Eaton, a professor in Western Washington University’s Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, presents “International Service Learning: Case Studies from East Asia and Kenya.” Citing examples from students’ experiences in Thailand, India and Kenya, Eaton reflects on the benefits and challenges of service-learning as a means to educate and cultivate globally aware citizens who are civically engaged and responsive to the needs of others.
