AAUW honors Whatcom County's top math, science students

Twenty-eight young women from Whatcom County high schools were honored May 14 by the Bellingham branch of the American Association of University Women at the annual High School Scholars Recognition Program. The high school juniors were nominated by their respective schools for excellence in math, science and technology, according to Gwen Parker.

Western Washington University Assistant Professor Janelle Leger has been awarded a five-year, $530,000 Early CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation, an extremely prestigious award given out to a small number of junior faculty members each year in an effort to promote their promising research and scholarship.

The team recently won a three-year grant of $970,000 from the National Science Foundation to continue their research.
