Eleven church choirs join voices to benefit Interfaith Coalition of Whatcom County

Individual performances by 11 church choirs culminate in the performance of two compositions by a combined choir of more than 225 voices under the direction of Leslie Guelker-Cone, director of choral activities and vocal studies at Western Washington University, at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 10, at Church of the Assumption, 2116 Cornwall Ave.

The Winter Choral Concert at Western Washington University featured a performance of the 20th century masterwork "Carmina Burana," a cantata written for choral and solo singers created by German composer Carl Orff.

Western's Combined Choirs performed the work with soloists, pianists and percussionists in collaboration with a group of Western dancers.

Concert Choir to perform holiday shows Nov. 24 at St. Paul’s in Bellingham

Western Washington University’s Concert Choir will continue its holiday tradition this year, performing “A Light in the Darkness: Songs of Hope and Comfort,” on Sunday, Nov. 24, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 2117 Walnut St. in Bellingham.

Western’s Concert Choir, conductor Leslie Guelker-Cone and featured soloists will perform two concerts – a matinee performance at 2 p.m. and a 7 p.m. evening show.

Western Washington University’s Concert Choir and Advanced Women’s Chorale will debut their new annual holiday concert at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 2117 Walnut St. in Bellingham.

Conducted by Professor of Music Leslie Guelker-Cone and Associate Professor of Music Timothy Fitzpatrick, “A Light in the Darkness: Songs of Hope and Comfort” invites the community to join together to usher in the holiday season with songs that inspire and uplift, bringing light to Bellingham's wintry days.

WWU opens new tradition with holiday concert at St. Paul's Episcopal Church

Leslie Guelker-Cone, director of choral activities in Western Washington University's music department, sent me a note about a new fall concert tradition the department is starting this year that will replace what they've done with Whatcom Symphony Orchestra's "Holiday Treasures" concerts. (This year, the orchestra is performing with the Bellingham Chamber Chorale on Dec. 2 at Mount Baker Theatre.)

Western Washington University's Concert Choir, led by Leslie Guelker-Cone, returns for its annual holiday show with Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, directed by Roger Briggs. The performance, filled with beloved holiday melodies, traditional carols and special surprises, starts at 3 p.m. Dec. 4 at Mount Baker Theatre, 104 N. Commercial St. The concert concludes with the traditional candlelit "Silent Night."

A DVD textbook from Leslie Guelker-Cone, a professor music at Western Washington University, was a featured publication of Santa Barbara Music Publishing at the American Choral Directors Association’s National Conference, held in Chicago in March. The DVD, titled "The Collaborative Choral Rehearsal: Inspiring Creative Musicianship," was published in 2010 and has been widely viewed and well received by choral music teachers both in the United States and throughout the world.
