Don Phillips donates massive jazz collection to WWU

Don Phillips, a longtime Bellingham jazz aficionado, recently donated a sizable quantity of his music collection to Western Washington University's jazz program and music library. Here are the details, according to Don, in his words: "I have amassed a large amount of jazz materials over the last 60 years, but health issues now dictate a downsizing as my wife and I start planning to move from two-stories to one story in the near future."

Western's Mike Allen Quartet sets monthly performance series, features world-class guests

After a year on sabbatical, The Mike Allen Quartet, comprised of Western Washington University faculty members Mike Allen, Miles Black, Adam Thomas, and Julian MacDonough, will play at 7:30 p.m. at the Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth (BAAY) at 1059 North State St. one Wednesday each month through June.

The kickoff set will be at on Wednesday, Oct. 9, with Allen on saxophone, Black on piano, Thomas on bass, and MacDonough on drums.

Western's jazz ensembles to play free concert Dec. 7

Western Washington University’s Jazz Studies Area will present its fall concert at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.

The performance is free and open to the public.

Music faculty to perform Nov. 15 at Bellingham's Meridian High School

Mike Allen and Miles Black, faculty members of Western Washington University’s Department of Music, will be featured in a special evening of jazz and classical music at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15 in Meridian High School’s recently updated auditorium at 194 West Laurel Rd. in Bellingham.

Composed of WWU Music faculty members Mike Allen, Miles Black, Adam Thomas, and Julian MacDonough, the Faculty Jazz Collective has been busy since its inception just two years ago. They have toured throughout the region to bring attention to the art form of jazz, performed regularly each Wednesday for the Bellingham community, and debuted their first full length album in April of 2012.

We caught up with Mike Allen, program coordinator for Jazz Studies at WWU and saxophonist for the FJC, to ask him a bit more about this incredible ensemble and their upcoming gigs.

Free jazz concert set for March 2 on campus

Western Washington University’s Department of Music will present Big Bands I and II, a concert featuring Western jazz students and led by instructor of Music and Jazz Studies area coordinator Mike Allen. The bands will perform at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 2, in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall on the Western campus. Admission to the concert is free.

Artist profile: Julian MacDonough

Drummer Julian MacDonough is well-known in the Bellingham community as one of the best drummers around, particularly as a jazz drummer. Born in Everett, he grew up in Bellingham and describes himself as an "almost-graduate of Sehome High School," who then "studied at the 'University of Mike Allen."' (Allen is the jazz program coordinator at Western Washington University, and MacDonough is part of WWU's Faculty Jazz Collective.)
